I am a little tardy with this race report, you know since this race happened way back in 2012.
I didn’t want to end my year of running in the Marin Headlands with a DNF. I had my eye on this race for a few months, and once I knew I was in good shape on the injury front I decided I was going to run! The Rodeo Beach race was on December 30th and was a great way to finish off the year on a good note.
I wasn’t sure which distance I was going to run. The 50k did sound appealing, but since I hadn’t done much distance since TNF50 I decided that the 30k was a safe option. It was still a challenging distance, but seemed very attainable at that point in time. Plus, I like to pick the race distances based on the course route and this 30k was a great route. There was no retracing or multiple looping, just a big figure eight on some of my favorite trails.
Alyssa decided to run the half marathon, so we drove over to the race together and hung out waiting to start running. My race started 15 minutes before hers, so eventually I said bye and went to stand with the rest of the runners. I ran into a few friends and was able to chat a little bit before going, then we were off!
As almost every race in the Headlands does, we started climbing right away. We climbed up the trails, up some stairs, and into the cold fog.
Then we came out of the fog and the blue sky appeared. This would happen a few more times during the race.
We ran on a number of the same trails as The North Face did, but they were in much better shape this day. I was very much enjoying myself and the beautiful day on the trails. Such a different day than a few weeks before! I was drinking and fueling like normal, which is pretty much just second nature now.
We made our way up Miwok then onto Coastal which had some incredible views of the ocean. There were a couple of muddy patches but nothing bad at all. I think I have a very skewed perception of mud now. I ran with a friend for a couple miles, telling stories and always making sure to take in the views around me.
The miles just clicked on by and I enjoyed every step. I was so glad to be out there in one of my favorite places, doing what I love.
I thought I might start feeling a little lack of endurance in the last couple miles, but I actually felt really strong and was able to push it a bit towards the end. It felt so good to be back to some longer distance after a little time off.
I ran up the street with the finish line in view and Alyssa was right there cheering me on. I heard some other friends at the finish too, and happily crossed it finishing off a great year of trail running.
18.7 miles/3:40:19/3,559’ elevation gain
We hung out for a bit after the race to snack, talk to some friends and I got to meet a couple new friends as well. I just love the community at these events.
This race finished off a great inaugural year with Inside Trail Racing! It’s been so fun to watch their races grow since their first even in January, and I am looking forward to many more in 2013.
This ended up being my last run of 2012, which put me at 2,788.6 miles for the year. Even with pretty much an entire month+ off in the middle of the year, I still was able to beat 2011 by over 440 miles. I am pretty sure I enjoyed those 2,788.6 miles more than any others before.
