August

I think in all years prior to 2012, August was probably my least favorite month of the year.  Being an avid summer-hater in the past, August was always just hot and dry, and I was always counting down the days until we were closer to fall.

But this year it’s a very different story.  I actually think it might possibly be my favorite month of running in 2012 so far.

Seriously… this is the same Aron writing this blog I promise.

It was a great month full of a lot of running miles, but the reason I love August so much is because I finally, really truly engulfed myself into trail running.  Sure I have done “a lot” of trail running in 2012 so far, but it hasn’t been even close to what I did this month.

But it’s not just the simple fact of running on the trails or the number of miles I did on the dirt, it’s a lot more than that.  It’s that I gained confidence, I really learned to trust my instincts, I have go-to routes, and I crave hills and dirt and adventure.  It’s that I don’t want to run on anything else, and do my best to take advantage of making that happen whenever possible, even though it might not be the easiest or most convenient.  It’s a very different attitude than I had before.  I have felt a shift in my perspective and outlook on trail running, and it’s been a fun transition to feel take place internally.

Let’s take a glimpse into what made August so great….

And to top off the amazing places I have ran… I ran with some amazing people as well which of course made it even better.

August closed out with 284.1 miles, 252.7 of which were on the trails.  My road running shoes are feeling neglected that’s for sure.

Every day we are losing a little more daylight, so I know I won’t be able to hit the same trail numbers going forward and that’s ok.  I know I will do my best, I will get my long runs in on the trails and figure out ways to get my feet on the dirt during the week whenever possible.

I am actually going to miss summer a lot this year.  It’s been fun to have an even newer perspective and love for running after injury, to really explore and discover what I love about it.  With all that said, I am very much looking forward to fall and everything one of my all time favorite running seasons brings.  A lot of fun stuff is on the calendar!

this paragraph spoke to me SO MUCH. i actually really do enjoy running trails… or did. but with recent events & last summer am so terrified of them. i’m hoping one day (once the injury clears up) to gain a confidence like that!

thanks for being such an inspiration!

You definitely do have some gorgeous trails to run on down there. I will go running on one of them someday!! So far, I’m loving September. :)

Great mileage! I think trail running definitely makes me love running more; the miles really fly by a lot faster than on the road. Plus you don’t have to worry about crossing streets, other people (most of the time) and other things like that which you see in the city a lot. My favorite place to run is Redwood / Chabot.

Those trails do look lovely! We did a family hike in Huddart Park on the Peninsula today and I kept thinking how amazing it would be to try and run the trails there…and it was so cool under the Redwoods!!
