The North Face 50M: Week 4

After a cutback week last week, I was looking forward to upping the miles again.  It turned out to be a pretty busy week, and I ended up missing one of my runs.  I still had a solid week and got the important runs in, but this week was a reminder of the constant battle of trying to find balance.

Monday
1 hour yoga

Like I said on my last recap (which was posted after this day already happened), I am going to make sure to take a full rest day going forward by doing yoga on an easy run day instead of my rest day.

Tuesday
6 mile road run

I ran with my friends from work and this actually turned into one of my fastest runs in a long time!  It’s funny to look back to when I used to have to force myself to run slower than 9:00 on my recovery runs, which was difficult!  But now if I get close to that pace, it’s so fast for me.  We ended up going sub 9mm pace for the last 4+ miles and it was tough.

Wednesday
am: 6 mile trail run
pm: 6 mile trail run

This was when things started getting busy.  I had a great trail run early that morning and then had dinner plans with a friend that night.  No biggie, I figured I could just move my double day to Thursday.

Thursday
10 mile trail run
pm: make up double run

I met up with Sima and Kristen for a morning trail run, then tacked on a couple more miles.  It was such a beautiful morning, I am really going to miss these summer mornings!  I said that on our run and Sima said hell must have frozen over.  Who would have thought those words would come out of my mouth ever.

That afternoon I had a volunteer thing for work, which we ended up walking over 3 miles to and from.  We spent the afternoon pulling weeds and moving dirt in the sun, so by the time it was time to go home I was toast.  Then I had to sit in traffic for 1.5 hours to get home, so I was really done.  Excuses, excuses.  Double day cancelled for the week.  Oh well!

Friday
8 mile trail run

Just a normal trail run on another beautiful summer morning.

Sunday
18 mile trail run

My legs were a little stiff when I woke up, but nothing too bad.  I was excited to hit the trails again and get a solid back to back weekend in.  Chris joined me for the first ~10 miles and we ran one of my favorite loops.  I am usually pretty good about fueling early, but I really make sure to do so on Day 2, just to help out with any energy issues.

A couple miles in my legs started loosening up and I was running along very happily.  When I said bye to him, I felt better than I had all day and was excited for 8 more miles.  I looped around and just had a great run, getting stronger with each mile.

18.3 miles/3:11:49/10:30 avg/2,489’ gain

Totals for week 4:
Miles:  64.0 (57.7 on trails)
Time: 11:31:18
Elevation gain: 8,299’

So even though I missed one run, it wasn’t that big of deal.  I had great long runs and lots of miles on the trails.  Looking forward to more in week 5!

You have access to the most beautiful trails! And the best friends too! I can use your good mood currently to be more positive about this week.

Wow that first picture is gorgeous – the trails snaking into the distance with the sun peeking over the hills. Not sure if it could get any more awesome than that.

It’s funny what you say about pace. I’ve noticed the same thing lately. I had a short run the other day and finished thinking “Wow, that was fast!” Then I realized I have run marathons faster than that. Ha! Things change. It’s all good!

    Nice week! :)
