This past weekend I had the pleasure of spectating the Vineman 70.3 triathlon again! I really enjoyed spectating when Chris raced a couple years ago, so I was very excited to go back. This time with Chris as my spectating buddy!
We had a lot of friends out on the course that day, so we were busy constantly looking for who might be coming out of the water or riding by on their bike. Two friends in particular that I was extra excited for, were my friends Jess and Page! They were both doing their first half ironman, had been training hard and I was excited to get to see them accomplish their goals.

The challenging part of spectating this race is keeping track (review of a tracking iPhone app tomorrow!) of where everyone is when you have friends in a bunch of different waves! We had friends starting as early as 6:50 and as late as 8:30. We were able to see almost everyone come out of the water, then we sat in traffic getting to T2 (it was a point to point race) which put a cramp in our spectating.
Eventually we got to T2 and had a great spot where we could see bike in, run out and run in. I was sure that it would be impossible to miss our friends in this spot, yet I still missed both Page and Jess on the bike in AND the run out. The only reason I realized I missed them is the tracker finally updated and their bike splits and T2 times both were posted. When I did the math I realized they were long gone. Spectator fail.
We eventually moved to the finish line where I saw most of our friends but again missed Page. I realized this when I turned around and she was sitting right behind me. Later I found out that when I was running up to get this blurry picture of my friend Jason that Page was RIGHT behind him. Sneaky girl. Technically I didn’t miss her?
It was a long, fun warm day and I had a blast being out there getting to cheer on my friends. They all did SO great and totally impressed me. I love getting to see hard work pay off and although I continue to have zero desire to join this sport, I sure do love watching it! I can’t wait for my awesome friends to do more triathlons… especially that big one in November.
Congrats Vineman racers!
