And the big weeks just keep on coming!
After my cutback week last week, me and my legs were ready to work heading into the last big 3 weeks of training. Everything came together very well and I had another great week of training!
One thing that was a little different about this week was the amount of pavement miles I got in. Most of my weekday runs are on pavement so that was no different, but I typically try to run one long run on pavement and one on trails (since AR50 is half and half). This week was very high on pavement miles, specifically in my long runs. I was very conscious of this and made sure to listen to my body specifically after Saturday and Sunday’s runs. This coming weekend will have a lot more trail miles, including my first 50k (!!!), which I am very excited for.
Onto the recap!
Monday
rest
Tuesday
7 mile run
Morning run with my work crew finishing at coffee.
7.0 miles/1:04:51/9:20 avg pace
Wednesday
11 mile run
Rainy morning solo run. It’s been a while since I have done a morning run like this on my own and it was rather refreshing. My legs felt surprisingly good and I had one of my faster runs in a while!
11.0 miles/1:39:33/9:03 avg pace
Thursday
am: 10 mile run
pm: 5 mile run
Double day!
I met up with the morning crew for an early morning 10 miler. Like so many early morning runs lately, I started this run feeling awful, but then like magic, I felt better and it turned into a great run!
10.1 miles/1:32:21/9:09 avg pace
After work was an SFM registration party at lululemon in San Francisco, so I went with a few other ambassadors! I ran a HILLY route with Alyssa and Alisyn, including going down windy Lombard Street.
4.8 miles/50:42/10:31 avg pace
Friday
6 mile run
A couple miles on my own and a couple with Kylie and Emma! They are being very good runners lately and have been getting lots of runs in between me and Chris.
6.1 miles/58:34/9:36 avg pace
Saturday
24 mile long run
My marathon eve run, where I got a few trail miles in towards the end of a long run.
I may or may not have done some math on this run to figure out where I was for the week and where I would be after the marathon…. hence the extra .7 miles which got me to 90 this week. I am an accountant, I can’t help it!
24.7 miles/4:09:52/10:09 avg pace
Sunday
26 mile long run
26.4 miles/4:17:52/9:45 avg pace
Total miles for week 13: 90.1!
This was another weekly high for me and I am still feeling strong. It’s getting a little scary knowing that I only have 2 big weeks left! I have fun runs to look forward to this week and am excited for a lot of time on the trails this weekend.
5 weeks to go!
*I have been getting a lot of questions about injury prevention, recovering, eating, etc, so I will be addressing those in some posts this week – stay tuned!

holy cow girl, look at all those calories burned! i’m definitely curious about your eating habits these days, i would imagine you are constantly hungry! great job, you are going to be SO ready for AR : )
This is SO impressive, Aron. Looking forward to your injury prevention post.
I’m looking forward to hearing about injury prevention and recovery! I was also hoping you could talk about balancing running with work and the rest of life. I’m still trying to figure out how best to do that myself and it’s amazing how tricky it can be to try to fit in a run, showering before and/or after work, running errands, spending time with friends, buying and making food, etc. I almost feel like I won’t have any time after work to just unwind other than on the run itself! Any tips for making it all work? I know you mentioned how helpful a cleaning lady can be among other things, but I’d love to hear how you manage to fit in all the little things like showering, laundry, errands, shopping, and everything else before and after work (and with a commute to boot!).
Another incredible week and a new milestone – congrats! Keep ‘em coming.
90 miles!?! Wow that is a lot! That’s great you ended the week with napa. That was on my list of possible marathons but I picked something closer to home. Hope your training continu to go well
I have question for you, while you are at it with recovery, eating, etc…. I am also training for my first 50 miler. I have been doing no speed work and combined with high (for me) mile weeks, I have been running much slower than normal. I know the whole point of an ultra is to let go of times and have fun, but I am def finding it difficult to reconcile my long run times with what I know I have done during marathon training cycles. It is even harder for me b/c I am doing a flat pavement ultra and not a trail one – so I can’t just say to myself “hey, there all those hills and tiny trails and turns!”. I have really been enjoying my training and esp seeing what my body is capable of, but I was wondering if you (as a very speedy marathoner) have had to deal with similar thoughts from loss of speed. Thanks and great job!!!!
90 miles?!!! Awesome week Aron!!
Haha! I laughed at the .7 comment. I am the same way, though not an accountant! I just like my numbers nice and even. Same thing happens when I pump gas; my dollar amount has to be at a good, reasonable number.
So this answers the question I had: Soon you will be an official ultramarathoner
I couldn’t remember if you had done a 50K previously.
