American River 50: Week 1

Here we are, starting to recap official training for my first 50 miler!  Yikes.

This week did not go according to plan at all.  Apparently the long weekend in Vegas took a lot more out of me than I expected, leaving me very tired throughout the early parts of the week.  Add in a very late Friday night consuming lots of wine at my work Holiday Party and I was one tired runner come the weekend.

I have never officially been “in training” during the good part of December.  Typically I am in marathon recovery mode after CIM which bodes well for holiday parties and everything else December brings.  I am not going to be too hard on myself this month knowing that these things will happen with the holidays, but I still have some bases I want to make sure and cover that didn’t get covered this week.  Mainly the back to back longer runs, trail running, and double day.  I have time and know that life will revolve around running again come January, but I want to make sure I go into those months of monster training well prepared!

I also know I need to start getting in the “training” habits too with good eating, sleep, hydrating, injury prevention, etc.  I will talk about this more later too, but it’s time to start getting serious about it all again.

On to week 1!

Monday
rest

I spent Monday walking around Vegas with Page.  We shopped, we ate, and just generally had a fun end to a very fun weekend.  I finally got back to the Bay Area and my house around 9pm.  Just enough time to unpack my bags and re-pack for my Tuesday morning run.

Tuesday
am: 6 mile run
pm: 5 mile run

I was really tired when my alarm went off and I didn’t have much of a voice.  I was feeling ok, but my cold has definitely been lingering.  I made it to my group run Tuesday morning though and we got in just over 6 miles.  I was happy to get the miles in but could tell this might be a rough week.

6.4 miles/58:52/9:10 avg pace

I had plans to do a double run this day but I just was so tired when I got home, I didn’t leave the couch.

Wednesday
8 mile run

I met up with Kristin and Sima for an early morning run and to fill them in on all things Vegas.  I was definitely feeling better but was so tired driving to work that day.  I just wanted a day to sleep and catch up!

8.0 miles/1:13:20/9:09 avg pace

Thursday
9 mile run

I met up extra early for my pre-work run since we had an all day meeting.  I struggled getting out of bed again but I did and felt pretty good on the run.

8.9 miles/1:20:25/9:00 avg pace

California cold, I love this weather!

Friday
5 mile run

This was the coldest morning we have had in the bay for a while!  There was lots of frost and it was a great morning for a run.  I was really tired this morning and just kept quiet tagging along to my running friends.  Some days the run wakes me up and some days it doesn’t.  This was definitely the latter.

5.0 miles/46:39/9:19 avg pace

Friday night was my work Holiday Party which was really fun, but definitely didn’t put me in good shape for Saturday.

Saturday
10 mile run
WCHM spectating + longest nap ever

I got up after around 4 hours of sleep to go spectate at the Walnut Creek Half Marathon which was so fun.  I got home and decided to take a nap and that I would run later in the day.  I ended up napping for 4 hours (in my running shoes the entire time!) and didn’t go running.  I went to bed early and slept for 9 hours that night, so apparently I needed sleep.

Sunday
14 mile run

I ended up doing my long run on the road this weekend just to save some time and since I had company.  Kristin and I met up for our long run which I feel like we haven’t done in forever!  It was fun to run the 2 of us and to run a route we used to run all the time.  The weather was perfect and I was happy to be running, but was ready to be done when we were getting close.

14.0 miles/2:05:30/8:57 avg pace

I had great plans for the afternoon but fell asleep on the couch for another 3 hour nap.  I feel so much better now after catching up on so much sleep and hopefully this will do good things for my running this coming week.

Total miles for the week: 42.4

17 weeks to go!

I need to devlope the ability to take a nap…or go to bed on time. So envious of all your sleep. But I love your reminder about all the aspects of “training.” Hydration, sleep, eating right. Sounds like I have lots of work to do in a bunch of areas.

Your training is great! Also I admire the apparant guilt/stress free attitude about “missed” runs. That will keep you healthier than the stress over a missed workout or two. You are on Great example!

I am trying! Especially for this time of year when so many other things are going on… it’s not easy letting go sometimes ;)

Well, I think your body was definitely needing rest. A very important aspect of training! You are going to be putting in a lot of miles between now and AR50, so rest when your body says to! :)

Exactly what I was reminding myself all weekend… :)
