An Afternoon on the Trails

Since the sun has been setting much earlier, Chris and I haven’t had a chance to go trail running together in a while and I have missed it!

I have really been wanting to get some longer trail runs done on the weekends to start building a better trail base, but lately my schedule just has been all over the place or Chris is working.  Somehow the stars aligned this weekend so that we could go trail running together… *gasp* on a Saturday!

I missed you trails.

We didn’t get to the trailhead until around noon, so the sun was out in full force, but I was hoping since we were running in Redwood Park there would be shade.  I have ran in this park before, but had never started from the place we started which worked out great!  I was really excited to find this new spot and to cover a bunch of new fun trails, some of which I remembered from the 30k I ran in 2010.

We started off great, my legs felt good and I was happy and running along with Chris.  As we made our way through the hills we started some bigger climbs and I started hurting a bit.  My heart rate was really high and I kept having to stop to catch my breath.  I was getting frustrated but chalked it up to not being on the trails much lately, it being hot, and me not hydrating properly the night before (water > blue moon Aron).  I kept on trucking along though.

Let’s guess where the hurting started.

Eventually I came back around and started feeling better and was able to finish the run strong.  I was so happy we had a chance to get out on the dirt and get some decent miles in!  Almost 10 miles later we were back at the car and off to refuel with a yummy lunch outside.

I also got to take my new trail shoes for their first spin and I really liked them!

Did you do anything fun this weekend?

Did you start at Skyline Gate? That first pic looks like where Sarah and I ran this morning in Tilden… such a pretty morning… but already warm by the time we were halfway through at 9!
When I am a little (or a lot!) faster, we must run together someday :)

Looks like a beautiful run. I hit the trail down by Batiquitos Lagoon – no where close to the hills you faced, but a lovely run along some beautiful water. Got out for some cross training today on my bike for a 17.7 mile ride near Del Mar.

How did you like your shoes?

I spent this afternoon out on the trails too – it was just too beautiful of a day not to! Glad you guys got such an awesome run in. The trails have a way of making you feel out of shape when you are climbing brutal hills like the one you guys climbed!

Did some trail running at huddart park! I will learn to love hill running, yes, I’m still traumatized by Nike! So serene, love trail running, but not racing.

I’m really jealous of the great fall weather everyone out west seems to be getting. I feel like I haven’t seen the sun in more than a week! (there have been patches of sun but we haven’t had a truly sunny day for a while).

This weekend I checked out a new restaurant (delicious) and did some hill repeats (not the most fun).

I’m doing a trail race in a few weeks and I’m kind or excited- it will be my first one.

Looks like a great trail, always nice to get out in the woods on a beautiful fall day!

I love trails – except when they are muddy! I prefer dry trails. Looks like you two had a beautiful day! That hill looks super intense!

I would love to have trails like that around here. It would offer such a great break from pounding pavement.

I’m a huge fan of your off season :)

Sounds like you had a great time! My last trail run was a miserable 30k and I haven’t been on the trails since, but your recent trail running has made me think that I should get back out there.
And I think you made the greatest decision to change up your training this fall/winter. Your posts sound happier, and you’re clearly running for the joy of it, rather than to hit certain numbers. I truly believe that’s the best way to train. I can’t wait to watch it pay off!

Awesome {in my best singing voice}. I love trails. And am jonesing to get out on them. Of course, my first try and a hurdling rock came after my head. But its not stopping me! I’m a noobie runner. While I can walk far…running on trails is my latest passion.

So.. moral of my story… I can’t wait to say I ran 10 miles on a trial like the one your pics depict. Nice run.
