Got Chocolate Milk? (& a Giveaway)

I still remember the first time I got handed a chocolate milk after a race and thought it was the best thing ever!  Not only was it delicious, but it was something I could actually stomach after pushing myself in a race.  At the time, I really didn’t know about the positive effects it had on recovery, but now there is even more of a reason to love chocolate milk and got milk? has launched a campaign all about it!

What the Refuel with Chocolate Milk campaign is saying:

The nutrient profile of lowfat chocolate milk is what makes it effective as a post-exercise recovery beverage. It’s a natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair muscles, has the right mix of protein and carbs to refuel exhausted muscles, plus fluids and is a natural source of electrolytes – like calcium, potassium and magnesium – to rehydrate and help replenish what’s lost in sweat.

Delicious and nutritious?  Sounds like the perfect recovery drink to me!  Sign me up.

The Refuel with Chocolate Milk campaign is traveling around the country to races to set up “Refuel Zones” where you can try it for yourself!  Be on the lookout for one at your next race.

For my Bay Area readers!

There will be a Refuel Zone at the finish line of the Giants Race this weekend from 6am until 2pm with free samples and a lot of fun, useful information.  You should definitely stop by if you are going to be there.

Are you in the Bay Area but not signed up to run the Giants Race?  Do you want to be?  Refuel Chocolate Milk has a bib they are letting me giveaway to one lucky reader!  The race is this weekend, so the giveaway will be a short one – don’t hesitate!

To enter:

Leave a comment telling me what your favorite recovery drink/food is!

I will leave the giveaway open until 10pm California time, tomorrow Tuesday, August 23rd.  I will pick a winner randomly and contact them tomorrow night!

*I received no compensation for this review, the opinions are my own, and Refuel Chocolate Milk is paying for the race bib I am giving away.

I am a finalist to become a member of the Refuel With Chocolate Milk team! Unfortunately I don’t live anywhere near California, but I would really appreciate it if you would vote for me!

Recovery drink is usually water, cytomax, or muscle milk light. Recovery food is usually a meal not a particualr recovery food product. (Praying good look)

orange gatorade, frozen berry smoothie, or milkshake, depending on what we have in the fridge/freezer!

My favorite recovery drink is Myoplex strawberries and cream protein drink. Yummy

I actually always drink a Chocolate Milk after my runs! (I’m also apparently in 5th grade and frequently drink it with actual meals too… like today, when I ate lunch at my desk.)

I would LOVE to run the Giant Race, I was so bummed to miss signing up! My long run this weekend is 11 miles too. . . perfect length with a 1 mile warm up and 1 mile cool down! ;-)

  6. Audrey August 22, 2011 at 9:56 pm #

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I am thinking about running part of this bandit as part of my 18 miles this weekend – would be so cool to be a legit runner there! :P

OH – I love getting a Peanut Butter Moo’d from Jamba Juice – yum yum! I don’t even know if that’s a good recovery drink but it sure is tasty ;)

Haha chocolate milk. I have been using that for recovery since I moved back from Africa because it’s one of my favorite things in the world (no exaggeration) and I’d have a cup after a run. I don’t buy it as much in SF now but I still usually have it. LOVE. Funny how it’s becoming so mainstream now too.

Dude. I just agreed to buy a bib off a friend of a friend for the Giant Race! Should’ve held out and tried my luck at your giveaway. :)

i love chocolate milk after a run or race! my favorite is to blend it with a frozen banana for a delish smoothie, especially after a hot run : )

  9. Stephanie August 22, 2011 at 11:18 pm #

As a very new runner (trying to train for my first half marathon!), I like to eat Trader Joe mini chocolate chip cookies and drink ice water. It’s not really “recovery” food, but they hit the spot!

Anyway, I would love to get into a race before running the Nike Half in October! Your blog is awesome and has really helped me see what a running community is like. It has also introduced me to routes and stores and races around the Bay Area! :) I dont feel like such a running newbie after going through some of your older entries. hehe

I’ve been drinking Fluid recovery drink mixed with milk after longer runs-yum!
I would love to run the Giant’s race this weekend! I’m running nike and the Giant’s race would fit perfectly for my training plan.

    I <3 chocolate milk! Best ever post-run/race!

I am a newbie runner so I consume whatever is available in the fridge for food and drink,
usually water, milk, juice, Gatorade, leftovers, etc. Followed your blog and your course description of the SF marathon course was very helpful when I completed the 2nd half marathon a few weeks back. I did try the chocolate milk after the SF race and thought it tasted great. Would love to run this weekend to prep for my Northern California Marathon in September.

Chocolate milk is always delicious and so is Katy’s Kreek! hehe I am going to the Giant’s game Friday night, so this would make it a Giants filled weekend and really help me get in my long run since I’ve been lacking a little motivation lately!

  15. Nelly August 23, 2011 at 1:59 pm #

Don’t enter me in the giveaway since I’m injured, but chocolate milk is indeed an awesome recovery drink post race!

I also like muscle milk – peanut butter chocolate flavor, gives a lot of protein and tastes great.

  16. Valerie August 23, 2011 at 2:45 pm #

chocolate milk and muscle milk (light) are my favorite post recovery drinks…both taste pretty yummy too (the choco milk moreso).

i wanted to do the Giant race but it was sold out. also im training for both the disney half marathon and NWM (also half) so this would be a good training run!

I recently started drinking coconut water after my long runs or races. I also drink chocolate milk after races, in fact I had a carton this past sunday, after finishing the Run On The Sly 20 miler, in Pollock Pines, CA.

  18. RoseRunner August 23, 2011 at 7:53 pm #

I like to drink beer after a run. I don’t care if it helps with recovery or not. I EAT WHAT I WANT BITCHES! sorry, I thought that sentence needed a “bitches”, or else it wouldn’t sounds as cool.

I considered this race a while back, might as well throw me in the entry pot!

I have been drinking a cold glass of chocolate milk for years now. Old running coach gave me the tip and I have been enjoying the chocolate guilt free!
