Giveaway: Fast & Furious 5k

So now that you all have some fast tunes to run to and we are all getting out the door to do our fast runs, how about testing out that speed at a local 5k?

Although I am not a huge fan of short races (um they hurt!), I think doing a couple of them during different parts of marathon training is a great way to assess your goals, gage improvement, and see what your legs can do!

Or you can take the more fun angle of short races and use them as a shake out run (perfect for after The San Francisco Marathon), run one as part of your long run, or bring a friend or your dog!

Lucky for THREE Bay Area readers, I am giving away entries into a new local 5k race that would work perfectly for any of those things!

Some good friends of mine have been working VERY hard to get the new Fast and Furious Festival organized.  It’s going to be an amazing day to both participate in and be a spectator at.  I am so excited!

fastandfurious

Details:
August 7th, 2011 in Pleasanton, CA
8am: 5k run/walk (stroller and dog friendly!)
9:30am: 1 mile running race (must qualify for – there will be speedies!)
10:00am: Kid’s running race
10:30am: Bike criteriums (including a kids bike race!) for the rest of the day!

As you can see, there is definitely something for everyone!   Maybe I can even talk all the Bay Area bloggers out there and have a meet up.

To Enter:

  1. Mandatory: Leave a comment on this post telling me if you love or hate short races and why.
  2. (+1) Like Fast and Furious Festival on Facebook and leave a comment here telling me you did!
  3. (+1) Tweet: I want to win an entry to the @FnFPleasanton 5k from @runnersrambles

The contest will be open until Wednesday, July 27th at midnight California time and I will randomly pick 3 winners and announce them on Thursday, July 28th!

Even if you don’t win you should still come out to participate and/or support the festival.  This is going to be a great day and a portion of the money raised is going to a very dear cause of fighting ALS which has touched home to a lot of my friends in the recent years.

Hope to see you there!

I love 5ks because they test whether or not my speed workouts have been sufficient/working — i know when I get tired after a mile, that I need to get more speedworkout in my ‘running diet.’

  2. Elise July 21, 2011 at 10:47 am #

    totally like FnFF on FB.

I love short races! I am a far better sprinter than I am a long distance runner. Working on the long distance stuff, but I am just not as confident….Yet. While I am not the fastest when it comes to short races, I am certainly not the slowest and I like the competition of it all. It hurts so good! :)
I also liked the FB page! Thanks for letting me know as I look forward to putting this on my calendar.
    Happy Running!

I like 5K’s because they are usually almost over before I really realize how absolutely horrible I feel.

I liked that Fast and Furious Facebook page.

5Ks are tough for me because you run HARD, but at least it’s over fast :)

Ok, personally short races SUCK! But I love doing them to get better at not sucking at them so bad. I prefer 10K to the marathon but hey, fun 5K’s are a necessary evil.

I did “like” your page on Facebook

Why I want to win- I don’t want to win… for myself. I want to win for one of my kids (I use that term loosley since she is 19 but she has been running on my team since she was 12 so she is a kid to me) that is spending her summer in San Fran and is so sad that she has to train for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon on her own and she can’t run with the team. She is lonely and needs a fun, running activity to help her with her training.

ANd I can speak for her- she is just like her “coaching father” she hates short races but loves going to races and trying her best regardless of distance. And she will “like” your Facebook page as soon as she gets back from camping at the end of this week.

    Thanks

I hate short races!!! I am so used to conserving energy now that I feel like my 5K pace = my half marathon pace. With that being said, I want to sign up for some 5/10Ks in the fall to work on my speed because then hopefully it will make be a better half/full marathon runner.

Unfortunately I can’t enter this one… I’ll be at a family reunion in New Hampshire with 30+ relatives and no central plumbing. Wish I could do the 5K though! :)

As a middle of the pack runner, I prefer shorter races to longer races because they take less time to run. Since it takes me a while to warm up and I never warm up before the race, I prefer 10Ks to 5ks.

I liked the Fast and Furious Facebook page.

    FB LIKED!! CHECK!!!

    & TWEET!! CHECK!!!

SHORT, MEDIUM, LONG . . I LOVE IT ALL! If you were to ask me if i like running short races like a 5k I would say YES! If you were to ask me if I liked running a 10 k I would say YES! But if you ask me if I like running a Half Marathon I would say. . ” I”ll let you know in October . . . . that’s if I survive to NWM!” (JUST KIDDING!) I love short races mostly because they are “SHORT” but also because I enjoy being around people who have the same goal, which is to cross that finish line. Whether it’s to train, to improve their time or to do it just for fun. . I’m all for it!! PLUS, I am in need of all the training I can get, especially since I’m doing my very FIRST Half! (yes, I am terrified!) But hey you only live once!!

  13. Kristin July 21, 2011 at 12:07 pm #

hey, I’m actually going to be in the east bay that day, it would be super cool to run! short, long… love it all! but as for the short races… it’s fun to run fast! and my natural inclination is to go out hard in races, which doesn’t screw you over nearly as much in a 5K :)

    • Eric July 21, 2011 at 10:57 pm #

There is a love/hate relationship with short races. I dislike them because I am not a sprinter. I run for distance and not for speed. However, I love the intensity and efforts it requires from me in order to perform well in them.
      FB liked!

  14. Bonnie July 21, 2011 at 12:27 pm #

I’m nervous about short races because I love to go long and know it will be tough, but at the same time I love them because they push me! :D Thanks for the giveaway!

  15. Bonnie July 21, 2011 at 12:29 pm #

PS – I “liked” Fast & Furious on FB!

  16. Amy July 21, 2011 at 12:32 pm #

I LOVE short races but ahte the pain :)

  17. Dash July 21, 2011 at 1:07 pm #

ugh, wish I was closer, Dash’s first race was called the Fast and the FURRIEST! :)

  18. Amanda July 21, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

I do like short races because they challenge me to give it my all and push pace my self-imposed limits. There’s no fear in short distances.

  19. Amanda July 21, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

    I liked them on Facebook.

  20. PJ July 21, 2011 at 2:35 pm #

I love fast races because your adrenaline is pumping the whole time and it’s so invigorating. On the other hand, I don’t like them because they are over so fast and sometimes I don’t get into my groove until it’s almost over.

  21. Stacy M July 21, 2011 at 2:43 pm #

I used to run 5k’s, but it’s been 20 years! I signed up for a 10k over Memorial Day weekend, but sprained my ankle the day before the race.

I’ll be running the second half of the SF Marathon as a training race and then another race at the end of August. This will be a nice change of pace!

  22. Bonnie July 21, 2011 at 2:47 pm #

Sent out my tweet too! Thanks Aron. :) (@bonnielang)

  23. Angela July 21, 2011 at 2:50 pm #

(Not entering the giveaway as I’m racing 10K the week before, but really wish I could! It sounds awesome.)

    Why I love the 5 & 10K:

    1) I actually stand a chance of ending up on the podium, which will never happen at a long race. (Though this may have just as much to do with the typical size of the field at 5Ks/10Ks as it does with my speediness. Maybe more.)

    2) You can train for them reasonably well even during periods when you aren’t able to run a ton of mileage.

    3) Quicker recovery = racing more often!

  24. Beth @ Boston2Berkeley July 21, 2011 at 3:43 pm #

I won’t be in town for this one, which is sad because I’d love to run it! I’m actually looking for a 5K to race right around the end of August, beginning of September. Does anyone have any recommendations for races in the Bay Area at that time? (I’m open to 10K to, but have my sights set on a 5K PR)

    • Aron July 21, 2011 at 3:47 pm #

WALNUT FESTIVAL RUN!!! September 11th – 5 or 10k. I am helping organize that race and will have a post promoting that one too in the near future :) http://www.walnutfestivalrun.com registration is open!

  25. Kaetlin @ dailydoseofrunning July 21, 2011 at 6:40 pm #

I don’t run a lot of 5ks because it seems silly to pay to run 3 miles, but I have set my running goals for this year on 10ks and 5ks because I am nervous about the time commitment as I start my new job in audit. I love long races and I thought I hated short races because my only real experience with them was HS cross country, which was just super stressful. I ran one a few months ago in Berkeley for a charity and it was so fun to push my limits! I would love to win this!

  26. Kaetlin @ dailydoseofrunning July 21, 2011 at 6:44 pm #

    I liked them on FB!

  27. Dorna July 22, 2011 at 9:49 pm #

5ks are tough for me because I have to push the pace!!

  28. Kari July 22, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

Love short races… they fool me into thinking I’m really a fast-twitch person, if only for about 15 seconds. The other 20-ish minutes hurt like no other. :D

Liked the page on Facebook as well…

  29. RoseRunner July 24, 2011 at 4:30 pm #

I think I hate short races. I’ve never run one. Nothing less than a half marathon. I’m frankly kind of terrified of 5k’s, and will never voluntarily enter one unless I win an entry….please don’t let me win…. ;)

  30. Jane July 25, 2011 at 4:17 pm #

I think I’d say my favorite race is the 10k. I think it’s a good balance of distance and speed…

  31. Gabby July 25, 2011 at 10:22 pm #

I love & dislike short races. I love them because I can see if my speed training is paying off. And, I dislike them because it’s HARD running all out, at least it’s over fast.

    I liked them on Facebook.

  32. Sasha July 27, 2011 at 9:18 pm #

I kind of hate short races, since I’m a “slow and steady” runner, but they are perfect for FORCING me to be fast and encourage me to do more speed work in preparation!
