Product Review: lululemon Run: Willpower Shorts

It’s no secret that I have an obsession with Nike Tempo Track Shorts.  I do have a few pair in my possession.

We will not disclose how many.

I have always been afraid to try any other shorts since I have developed this obsession, because well, I have too many pairs to love anything else more.

Well all that changed last week.

Being a co-captain of team lemon run club is awesome, but I do have to go into the store every single week and drool over all their amazing clothes.  I have been scoping out all their new run shorts recently and was invited to come into the store to try on all their new pairs!  I was very excited and immediately went to the store to test them all out.

I have 2 pairs of the Groovy Run short, which they aren’t making anymore, that I liked because they were longer.  The popular Speed Short was just a little too short for me.

I tried on 3 pairs:

  • Run: The Fastest Short – longest running short, super light fabric, no back pocket, sized down*.
  • Turbo Run Short – combo of Groovy Run and Speed Short, fit similar to Groovy Run, but flipped out on the sides a little strange on me.  Light fabric and pockets.  Same size*.
  • Run: Willpower Short – perfect length, super light fabric, pockets, sized down*

*Size note: I am comparing the sizes to what I wear in the Groovy Run shorts (which is a size bigger than I wear in their tights).  I did always feel that I was between sizes in Groovy Run, but went with the bigger size, whereas the Willpower and Fastest, I went with the smaller size.

The Willpower Shorts felt the best, so I left the store with them, thanks to lululemon!

You never know with shorts though until you try them out on a run.  Thursday morning I took them out for their first run and it was love at first step.  The shorts are so light and comfortable, don’t ride at all, have a mesh liner/underwear, have the amazing lulu back and gel pockets.  There was something about them that was amazing and I immediately publicly declared my love for them… and you know that’s a big deal.

Sunday I did my long, warm run in them and still felt the same way.  You know when something just makes you feel good when you are wearing it?  That’s these shorts for me.

So I think it’s official to say I have a new favorite running short.

**Just FYI, I had this post written before the whole Ambassador deal from Tuesday.  I will definitely talk more about that very soon since lots of people were wondering what it’s all about.  I am so excited to be part of a brand I truly believe in and love.

***One pair (I loved them so much a second pair was purchased) of these shorts were given to me at no cost in exchange for my time and involvement with the lululemon run club and as part of their research and development program.  I was not asked to review them on the blog, but really wanted to because I love them that much!  As always these opinions are my own.

What are your favorite running shorts?  Have you tried any of lululemon ones?

I love lululemon! Congrats on being chosen as an ambassador!! My new favorite thing of theirs is the Run:Split Short. I love how light the fabric is and they fit perfectly.

I like my groovy run shorts but can’t wear them for runs much longer than an hour because they are too short and my thighs tend to chafe. Maybe I will have to try these willpower shorts. They look a bit longer!

i LOVE my nike temo shorts but also have a pair of craft shorts that i’m loving this summer. I may have to splurge on these though! we will see!

the groovy run shorts are my favorites too and i was so sad they discontinued them. you’re right, the speed shorts are super short (i only use them for workouts at home). great review on the willpower shorts – i’ve been using mine for the past month and they work just as well as the groovy shorts! loved the review! have you tried the sun guard shirts yet? wondering how they feel during warm weather runs…

  5. Rachel June 15, 2011 at 11:11 pm #

i also have my fair share of nike tempos, but these lulu ones look great, too! if only i lived closer to one…

Okay, I am definitely treating myself to a pair of these as a reward for… something. Maybe a 5K PR in couple of weeks? :)

When I first started running (and you know, wasn’t sure I would really stick with it…) I bought a few pairs of Target’s Champion shorts (aka wannabe Nike shorts). They did an okay job really, until I bought some way nicer Nike shorts and now I cringe if all my clothes are dirty and I have to put on a pair of my Target shorts. So I also have an affinity for Nike Tempo Track shorts…I recently bought a pair of their Pacer shorts and I like them alot, too. I could probably be like you and own a pair in every color, if only my husband would allow! I’ll have to check these shorts out if I’m ever near a store!

I’m also a fan of both the groovy run and the willpower shorts. I like the fit of the fastest shorts, but not having the back zip pocket is a deal breaker for me.

  9. Ana-Maria June 16, 2011 at 4:36 am #

Bad, Aron, very bad. Now the secret is out about the willpower shorts (my favs too), and it will be even harder to find great colors on line:)

So excited for this review! I have never tried their running shorts but love my running skirts and crop pants from lululemon. It seems everything I try from there is love at first step :o) but I have been apprehensive about the shorts because I wonder if they would be too short on me. This review will have me zipping over to the store to try out the Willpower shorts ASAP!
Congrats on becoming an Ambassador! What a great company – with fabulous clothes and a wonderful manifesto! – to represent. I have dreams of doing something like this with our local store one day…you are inspiring in so many ways!!!

I’m going to check these out! I live dangerously close to two lululemon stores!

  12. kristen June 16, 2011 at 5:37 am #

Whaaaaat? They are no longer making the groovy run short? FAIL lulu-lemon. Major FAIL. I may try the willpower short soon. After I get over no the elimination of groovy run shorts :(

  13. Nancy June 16, 2011 at 5:55 am #

I am NOT a shorts fan….never found a pair that didn’t ride up into embarrassing places! However I have been coveting the run skirt at lululemon!! The one with the cute pleats in the back! LOVE!!!!

  14. Tonia June 16, 2011 at 6:57 am #

I am so not a shorts runner, but the run: willpower skirt is my new favorite. I’ve been wearing it 24/7.

I can’t run in shorts because I get a rash :(. Actually, I can’t even run in most skorts because they aren’t long enough :(

    So…. abooooooo

  16. Emily June 16, 2011 at 7:23 am #

I REALLY need to try these shorts. I’m addicted to the speed shorts (i love short shorts!) but these sound amazing. I have walked into multiple lululemons and picked them up and ALMOST bought them like 8 times since you tweeted about them.

  17. Jessica B. June 16, 2011 at 7:50 am #

I have heard so many great things about Lululemon but I try my hardestnot to go into any of their stores. I know I will come out with at least $100 worth of clothing. My fav shorts are a pair of Reebok shorts I bought 6 yrs ago, they are super worn out and there may be a hole in the umm crotch region (good thing they have build in underwear) they don’t sell them anymore but I loved them because they had a zip pocket on the but that i could stash stuff in

  18. Michelle @ The Running Jewess June 16, 2011 at 7:54 am #

I didn’t run in shorts until recently when I invested in a pair of Nike Tempos. At first I was apprehensive about running in them, but I’ve grown to love them. They are perfect for warm weather running. And yesterday they felt weightless during my speed training session, it was perfect. I’m open to new short options, so I may have to check out lululemon soon!

  19. Melody June 16, 2011 at 7:58 am #

Those shorts look AWESOME on you! I think you found a new pair, too ;-)

  20. Kristen (inspiredbydooce) June 16, 2011 at 8:00 am #

I have two pairs of the speed shorts but I think I need to go try those Willpower shorts on!

  21. lisa June 16, 2011 at 8:09 am #

I just find it amusing that they are called willpower when it is clear you have no willpower when it comes to buying running shorts. Hahahahahahaha

  22. Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee June 16, 2011 at 8:12 am #

I have more lululemon speed shorts than I should probably admit, but I love them! They’re the perfect length for me and are soooo cute and comfortable. I especially love all of the pocket storage!
I just got a pair of the Split Shorts too. I’m excited to try them!

  23. stoppingfordaisies June 16, 2011 at 8:58 am #

I so want running shorts and I went to lululemon the other day to try some different pairs on but ever single pair felt like they were bunching on me. Not fun. :(

  24. Michaela June 16, 2011 at 9:00 am #

I love lululemon shorts too! But I am a Speed Short fan — shorty-short girl. ;)

  25. J June 16, 2011 at 9:19 am #

I love the nike tempo shorts too but I also love my under armour spandex shorts! They are my racing shorts and I love them because they fit well and don’t add extra bulk!

  26. RoadBunner June 16, 2011 at 10:51 am #

My favorite running shorts are the Oiselle distance shorts (something about them just makes me feel really fast) and the Lulu Speed Shorts! I love me my running shorts!! I especially love all the pockets these two shorts have which is a must for a distance runner.

  27. katie June 16, 2011 at 10:56 am #

I am scared to go into lululemon because i might never come out.

  28. Cate June 16, 2011 at 10:59 am #

I LOVE Nike Tempo shorts… my very favorite by far. I’ve never tried lululemon shorts but I just got a pair of wunder under capris this weekend and am OBSESSED!

  29. Stephanie June 16, 2011 at 12:14 pm #

  30. Holly June 16, 2011 at 1:11 pm #

i keep hearing all the great reviews for lululemon–guess i’m going to have to bite the bullet and couch up the cash to check them out. sounds like a plan for my unscheduled day off tomorrow :)

  31. Kristy@RunTheLongRoad June 16, 2011 at 1:28 pm #

I love Nike tempos but I’m looking for something different with pockets. Coincidentally, I’m going to Lululemon this Sunday ;) I see Lulu shorts in my future!

I found this review and went to order some shorts — and I don’t think they make them any more! Please tell me I’m wrong!
