San Francisco Marathon Training: Week 1

As I mentioned in my new countdown post, I am back in marathon training!  It only took what a week?

2011 SFM Training Plan

I am using my trusted Pfitzinger between marathon training program.  After week off of running post Big Sur, I got back going this week with 12 weeks until The San Francisco Marathon.  The first couple weeks of the schedule are pretty much fully based on recovery and building back up the miles which is exactly what I need right now.  Since I had had the extra week off, I bumped up my long run a bit, but otherwise stuck pretty close to the plan.

Monday
5 easy

I ran after work and had a terrible run.  My legs felt so heavy and everything just hurt.  I wasn’t happy but didn’t think much of it, knowing these runs happen especially after double marathons.  I was glad to be done.

Tuesday
5 easy

My weekly team lemon run club!  This run was SO much better than Monday’s.  I ran with Kristin the whole way and we had tons to discuss.  You can always tell when we are discussing good topics by our pace!  My legs felt way better and I was much happier with this run.

Wednesday
rest

I took the day off of running, but worked my quad with the foam roller and trigger point kits.  I also did some weights – FINALLY!

Thursday
6 easy

I got back into morning runs this day and met up with Kristin and Stephen for a morning run.  It’s SO light out in the mornings and I loved that.

6.0 miles/53:47/8:57 avg pace

Friday
5 easy

Another morning run with Kristin – best way to start a Friday!

5.0 miles/46:21/9:16 avg pace

Saturday
9 easy

I met up with the SFM training group in Emeryville.  It was a smaller group, so I didn’t have anyone to pace, but ran with another pacer I hadn’t talk to and had a great run chatting with her!  I had 7 on the plan, but figured I could handle 8 or 9 so went for 9.  Our route ended up being a little bit long, but I felt great and was able to finish up strong.

9.5 miles/1:25:15/8:58 avg pace

Sunday
rest

I actually didn’t set an alarm on a Sunday!  It was so nice to sleep in and stay out late on Saturday night – things that are definitely not a regular occurrence in my house anymore.  I made us breakfast, drank a bunch of cups of coffee, and enjoyed a relaxing morning.  I am definitely going to enjoy these Sundays this summer.

Total for week 1: 30.5 miles

Next week is more of the same stuff with keeping the miles easy, but lengthening a couple of the runs.  I know it’s really important that even though I am feeling good to make sure and keep the miles easy for a bit to make sure I am recovered.  The speed stuff will be coming soon enough.

11 weeks to go!

We were going to run the SFM this year, but the schedule changed. Good luck with the hill training. We’ll probably do it next year. I look forward to your training and eventual success with race. Best wishes!

I am excited for this race. I am going to be participating with my girlfriend who will be running her first Full Marathon. I am only going to be running the Half Marathon this time. Train hard and strive for your goals. I followed you on your journey to Boston 2011
