Product Review: Road ID

We all know safety is a big deal for runners.  It’s a dangerous place out there sometimes and being safe is so important!

I have been blabbing about safety for a while now, but for whatever reason I have always hesitated when it came to buying a Road ID even though I always thought they sounded like the best idea.  In late December I was lucky enough to be contacted by Outside PR firm to be given one to review!  Since this is something I have always wanted for myself but hadn’t bought yet, I was even more excited.

I was sent a code and was able to pick out and personally design my very own Road ID, and therefore get the entire online experience.

road id screen3

I immediately went online and got started.  The site was really easy to navigate and there were several options to choose from.  I chose the wrist ID sport because I thought I would use it most.  I started to build my ID by measuring my wrist with a dollar like instructed, chose my size and went on to the next step, filling in all kinds of information!  I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to put in here, I mean there is a lot to choose from, but the site gave perfect examples of what to put, how to abbreviate things and gave suggestions I wouldn’t have thought of.  AND you can see what it will look like while you type.

Once I was done filling everything out (including my name, city, birth year, 3 emergency contact phone numbers, and any alergies or medical history I might have), I got a preview and hit submit.  The site said it would take 7 – 10 days to get to my house, and since it was just before Christmas I figured it would probably be a while.  A couple days later it showed up!  I was really surprised it was already there but very excited.

Obviously this is the back side without my info,
but you can see how it fits next to Garmin
Road ID

Since then I have worn it on every single run.  It is extremely comfortable and I don’t even know its there.  I just place it above my Garmin and head off into my run.  I definitely feel better knowing I have my contact information on me and it just gives you a piece of mind.  It is also SO nice not to have to carry my ID around with me.  I can’t tell you how many times I have left it in my running clothes and didn’t have it when I needed it.  Now I have something that is specific to running and just part of my gear now.

The prices start at $19.99 and if you want to buy one for yourself or someone else in the next week, use coupon code: ThanksAron1505447 for $1 off if ordered by 1/22/11.  They are also on facebook and twitter and often have promotions and giveaways there so make sure to check them out.

I highly suggest everyone add a Road ID to their list of essential "running things." I wish it wouldn’t have taken me so long to add it to mine, but I am glad it’s there now!

***I was given this product for free in exchange for my review.

I just got mine in the mail today, took it out on a run, and love it so far! Looks like it fits just perfect next to your Garmin.

I recently bought the shoe Road ID for myself and I love it! I also gave my son’s girlfriend a gift certificate for Christmas (she is always running in the dark and alone this time of year) and just bought one for my daughter. By the end of the year I plan on giving these as gifts to all my running and biking friends.

I think it’s what I am going to start buying all my active friends and family!! Great gift idea.

Mine has my contact info for my mom and hubby, my name, DOB, allergies and at the bottom says “Run like a Mother”. I have the pink ankle one so I have some extra reflection. I love the neoprene too.

  4. Michelle January 13, 2011 at 9:10 pm #

My husband got me one as a Christmas gift because so often I run out on country roads with wacky drivers! I never run without it now!

I’ve had mine for a while and love it! So much better than sweaty ID in my sports bra! :)

  7. Marie C. January 13, 2011 at 9:42 pm #

I have been thinking about getting one of these especially since I tend to run in the dark.

One cool trick I picked up on someone’s blog (can’t recall which one) is to remove the wrist strap from my Garmin 305 and use my WristID as the strap. Other than being slightly tricky putting the 305 in the charging cradle, it works GREAT. It also forces me to remember to wear the RoadID.

  12. Nitmos January 14, 2011 at 8:41 am #

It’s a good idea but I don’t want one. If something happens to me, I want a big national search with lots of publicity. The Road ID would seem to get in the way of that if they knew who I was right away.

    • Aron January 14, 2011 at 8:45 am #

LOL of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less from you ;)

  13. Joanne January 14, 2011 at 8:51 am #

I just read Nitmos’ reason not to want one. How funny! I agree, but unfort. my dog would probably give my identity away too quickly. :)

You know, one of these days I’ll actually buy a Road ID. I mean to buy one pretty much every month but I still don’t have one.

    • Jessica January 14, 2011 at 6:44 pm #

I’m right there with you. I got a coupon from a race that expires in 2012. Every time I look at the coupon, I think “I should probably buy this befor eit expires.”

  15. Marlene January 14, 2011 at 9:07 am #

I always forget to put mine on… bad Marlene. I’m thinking I should get the shoe tag…

Road ID is the most important thing every athlete should have. For a long time I didn’t have one, then my friend motivated me to get one. I just bought the shoeID one, that way I really don’t even think it’s there. I realize that you never know when you will need the roadID – not only could you get hit by a car, but you could pass out on a run from exhaustion, and it would come in handy for emergency personnel.

While I do think its important for every athlete to have a roadID, I think its even more important for bikers and swimmers to have one. Because they are at even greater risk for an accident with the risk of getting hit by a car or drowning. At least with running you are on land and likely away from most cars.

One of my friends told me about these around Christmas time and so I jumped right on it and got my husband and I one for stocking stuffers. You are right the site is great and it was really easy to use. I got the one that goes on my shoe, although my husband pointed out the bracelet might be better because of switching between shoes. Its nice you buy the one plate then you can buy the wrist part for like $3.00. Good post!

thanks for this post- i’ve been meaning to get one for a long time & now w/ the coupon code, i just did it. :) thanks!

  19. Kristen January 14, 2011 at 10:46 am #

I just got the wrist ID elite for Christmas in pink. I haven’t used it on a run yet but have used it on the bike. I have a horrible fear of getting hit on my bike and winding up laying in a ditch!!

I think it is a MUST for any athlete that goes out – even on a 2 mile run. I am kinda embarrassed I waited so long to get one.

I just love my Road ID. I’ve had one for over a year now and suggested that my MIL give a gift certificate for one to my husband. 2 nights ago, he went online and ordered it. He is so excited to get it.

I have that same RoadID and it makes my wrist SO itchy! I think it bothers me on 70% of my runs. Do you wear it over sleeves? Once I can find a good coupon code, I think I’m going to the the elite one that’s rubber. I think that will solve my problem. :-)

Thanks for this! I got a Road ID gift certificate for Christmas, but I haven’t redeemed it yet because I couldn’t decide which ID to order. I think I’m going to go with the same one you got, although now I have to pick a color. Decisions, decisions!

  27. Shawn January 20, 2011 at 1:39 pm #

I love my road-id I’ve moved (3 times) since I ordered it though and I need to get it updated. I like the new band styles.

You might try adding a video or a related pic or two to get people interested about
