race report: 2010 spirit run 5k

i made it back from boston late on friday night. chris picked me up and we were home around midnight. we were up the next morning at 4am to volunteer at a local triathlon, which lead to a very TIRED me this weekend. the week in boston (which i will post ALL about tomorrow!), time change, little sleep, has had me napping a lot and just feeling a little off.

my alarm went off sunday at 5:30am and i really didn’t want to get up. i think if i hadn’t pre-registered for this race i probably would have skipped it. but i was a good girl (after a couple snooze hits), got up, ate and got ready and was out the door just after 6:30 to drive down to the race.

i had signed up for this 5k a couple weeks ago, again as a test to see where i am at. it’s a very big team event, so it was fun to see so many friendly faces out there. my 5k “PR” is from november on a very short course (2.9 miles) so i don’t really count it. my 5k previous to that was in 2008, so i really had no idea how i would do today. i knew it would be tough, especially being so tired, but i wanted to test out the legs. i knew my garmin said 7:19 avg on that race in december so i was hoping i could be faster than that, even though i was at peak marathon training at that point… that would mean i am getting faster :)

i warmed up for just over a mile and then went to watch the 10k start and headed to the start line with some friends. i had heard this course wasn’t that fast since there were a lot of turns and a long gravel section in the middle, but i was definitely going to give it my best shot. the horn went off and we were off!

the first mile flew by, i couldn’t believe i was already 1/3 of the race done… weeee 5ks go fast!

the second mile we got on the gravel path and it was not easy. it was really hard to run fast and keep it going when you were working so hard. i gave it what i could though and just kept on pushing knowing the pace would slip a little.

around 2.4 miles the 5k had to turn and the 10k had to go straight. i wasn’t paying attention until i was at the turn and realized i wasn’t sure which way to go. i had started the turn, but wasn’t sure so i stopped and took out my headphones (yes my fault i couldn’t hear the volunteers), asked which way to go and then they told me to go the way i was going. i don’t know how much time i lost there but it threw me off quite a bit and i was a little flustered. i looked at my garmin, saw my pace had slowed way down and just tried to keep pushing.

a little bit later i looked at my garmin again and it was at the same spot! i guess when i stopped to ask the volunteers i must have stopped my garmin on habit? i have no idea but i was really annoyed i didn’t know how far i had left and how fast i was going. pretty soon there was another right turn and the finish line was straight ahead so i pushed it hard to get across.

official results: 3.1 miles/22:31/7:15 avg pace
female: 17/412
age group (20-29): 5/52

between the non chip time and the stop in the middle i definitely could have done this course sub 22:30. i was really irritated with myself that the little mishaps happened, but whatever, the best thing about 5ks is you can do another one again soon! which i will be since i have another one in 2 weeks that everyone says is way faster than this one. i am excited to see how that one goes. either way i have a new firmer 5k PR and ran a pretty solid race for being flustered and really tired. it was a fun day being out there with the team and i have a little better idea of where i am at right now.

hope you all had a great weekend, i can’t wait to tell you about all the running i did in boston!! i had such a great time, so be on the lookout for a post tomorrow!

Great race! You can always throw another 5k into the mix with any distance training. They feel so short when you're 1/2 and full marathon training. ;)

So funny! I saw that race as we drove to Sac along 680 and said to Ari, I can't believe there was a race and I didn't know about it! LOL! He told me I was slipping :)
    Very cool race! Congrats!

Yay for a new pr, but boo for the little mistakes. I hate that, and especially since it's a short race it stinks to think about that. Good thing you have another one coming up quick. I love that about 5ks too, they go so fast!

Congrats on the speedy 5K!! I am gunning for a 22:30 this year but I know it will be TOUGH.

Sucks that you lost seconds due to no chip time and being unsure which way to go. Sub-22:30 next time!

Great job! I don't think I'll ever run another 5K. Too painful to race them :)

Every now and then I'll stop my Garmin mid-race out of habit, too. Usually I catch that I did it and start it right back up instantly, though.

great job on the 5k despite a couple of follies along the way. I'm doing my next one in 2 weeks too! Let's make sure our PRs only stand for that long. ;)
