friday favorites – fit bit

one of my christmas presents from chris was a piece of paper in a card saying i had one more present on the way – a fit bit

actually at the time i had no idea what it was, i looked at the website a little bit and it looked like fun, but i didn’t really “get it”.  we received numerous emails pushing back the shipment date and i was starting to get a little bit annoyed by it, but whatever.  FINALLY in april we got an email that said it was being shipped and my little fit bit arrived.  i like getting presents so it was actually kind of fun to be getting a christmas present in april :)

so what is a fit bit?

it is essentially a tracker of sleep, steps taken, calories burned and distance traveled.  i wear mine clipped on my waist band most of the time and i can click the little button and it will show me how many steps i have taken, calories i have burned, miles i have traveled, AND (my favorite part), there is a little flower that grows throughout the day the more active you are.

sidenote: i wore it during my trail run on monday night but i had forgotten since i usually take it off when i am running so i don’t lose it.  anyways, when i got back to the car i clicked it and the flower was SO BIG!  i was very excited and even squealed a little bit in front of tara and maritza

i have always wondered how many calories i burn a day, just because i do tend to track my food every now and then, especially during marathon training when i want to make sure i am refueling properly.  i have found all kinds of calculations online based on your activity level, etc, but i never know if that is right.  this i feel is much more accurate and tells me the days i am more active even without running.

they have a website where you log in and it uploads all your data just being within a certain distance of the computer and the dock/charger.  you can also track your food in the website, which i haven’t done yet.

my other favorite feature is the sleep tracker.  when you get in bed you wear it in this bracelet and you hit start so it knows you are in bed.  then it tracks your sleep patterns throughout the night.  it shows you how many times you woke up, how long you were in bed, and how long you actually slept.  i don’t know why, but i love seeing sleep patterns so this feature really fascinates me.

i am still getting used to it and i do forget it sometimes but every time i do wear it i am so glad i did.  i don’t even notice it’s there and it encourages me to leave my cubicle more throughout the day since i see the steps i have taken and i want the flower to grow!

if you are looking for a tracker like this (and can wait a couple months to receive it, the only negative part) i definitely would recommend this one.  and at $99 it isn’t that expensive, although not something i would have ran out and bought for myself.  thank you husband for finding awesome gifts like these.

a couple more runs to log for the week!

thursday i got off from work early and went out for a 6 miler.  my legs definitely felt the track workout from the night before, but they came around.  it was a beautiful afternoon after a very stormy morning.

6.1 miles/53:47/8:48 avg pace

this morning i went for another 6 miler.  i was tired this morning and kept the pace easier.  i have been doing  A LOT of 6 mile runs in the last couple weeks since i am just trying to get my base back up.  next week i will start lengthening some of them a little bit.

6.0 miles/54:36/9:05 avg pace

today is a short day for me then it’s a long weekend and i CANNOT WAIT!!!!!  we don’t have too many plans which i am thankful for, but i have some fun runs i am looking forward to.

hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

very cool! I kind of want that "body bugg" they wear on the biggest loser, just because I'm curious as to what I ACTUALLY do throughout the day. But they are sooooo expensive…I'd rather upgrade my Garmin, hee hee

I was so excited to read this post! A friend of mine got the fit bit a couple of months ago and I have been wondering if I should get one too. Thanks for the review!

My friend and I were just talking about sleep science yesterday (I am trying to get on a better sleep cycle) and she was saying how it was better to wake up during certain parts of your sleep cycle than others. Ideally you should get up about 30 minutes after something sort of subconsciously starts to wake you up (like the sun?). I obviously don't know much about what I am talking about :) but looking at your sleep tracker, I was like – oh, she should have gotten up 30 minutes after all that pink just after 6 – which you kind of did! OK – rambling here…

Thanks for the review. I'd never heard of that before. Have a great weekend!

I'm definitely curious about the fit bit. I got a Gruve (http://muve.me/) free from FitBloggin' and while I like it, it doesn't track as much or give you as much data.

Let me know what it says calorie-wise if you ever wear it running — my Gruve registers really low. It told me I burned 517 calories during my last half marathon, when my Garmin says 1200!

    That is cool!

What a fun fitness tool! Awesome. I have been doing a ton of six milers lately too and it's getting a wee bit boring. Just making things shorter or longer totally changes my perspective and refreshes my running.

    Happy weekend!

Okay, that thing looks REALLY fun! I'd get a kick out of the sleep tracker!

that sleep tracker is awesome. Though I would hate to have it prove me wrong when I say that I slept like crap…

That is so neat! I will have to put that on my wish list. I'd love to see how much actual sleep I get with LBM – still – getting me up through the night!

I JUST read about this somewhere yesterday (the fitbit) and thought it sounded cool!

I love that Fitbit thing. Being into fitness, it's just one more way to have info about how you're doing. VERY cool.

Very cool – I hadn't heard of this before.
The sleep tracker is really interesting to me. I bet that I'd strap it onto the puppy for a day to see just how much she actually sleeps!

I was looking at the fit bit for a christmas present for my husband, and I loved the idea of the sleep tracking. I ended up going with the body bugg since it uses more than steps to calculate calories burned. I've been really amazed to learn what things actually burn calories and how many calories a person uses in a normal day. He had already lost 30 lbs but was having trouble getting any more off. Since then he's lost another 15 just by knowing how many calories he burns and being motivated to keep the number going up!

Thanks for sharing about another tool to use with a healthy lifestyle!

  23. Mica May 29, 2010 at 3:37 am #

Whoa, I have never heard of this product, but I am super-intrigued. (I LOVE gadgets!)

I think I'd be a little scared to see my "sleep efficiency." I'm not a very good sleeper, and it always makes me feel like I'm ruining my health.

Very interesting!! I want one!! Have a great weekend, yourself!

That is the craziest little gadget I've seen yet – ha, I have never heard of these! I think the sleep feature would fascinate me too; good to know when you're really getting your rest ;) And the flower feature is just adorable.

  26. kristen May 29, 2010 at 5:17 am #

That's pretty cool. Is that your sleep pattern?! If so, wow! Super jelous. Mine would probably be more pink than blue.

  27. Glenn Jones May 29, 2010 at 6:36 am #

Wow. That's some pretty cool looking technology there! I have my research cut out for me now….

  28. Christine May 29, 2010 at 7:35 am #

This is soo cool! I have always wanted something that keeps track of my sleep, just because I'm curious haha. Thanks for the review!

  33. lifestudent May 29, 2010 at 6:34 pm #

Im assuming it goes by movement in sleep? What if you move in your sleep, but are still sleeping? What if you lie still, but awake, watching the clock tick for hours?

This thing sound really cool … especially as an insomniac who is curious as to how much sleep I ACTUALLY get (versus assuming). Im super interested in how it works and might have to do some googling!

  34. simplyrunningonfaith May 29, 2010 at 7:59 pm #

Love this! I'd totally get a kick out of the flower growing! I saw that Body Bugg on BL and then saw the price and was like holyy cow. Definitely not in my price range, but this is more doable. I love the sleep part and am convinced that I wake up more often than I "realize" and am always curious to see if how long it takes me to fall asleep…Cannot wait for this weekend! It'll be great to see you all :)

  35. All Things Jaime May 30, 2010 at 6:13 am #

Okay, so I definitely want one!! :)

  36. lindsay May 30, 2010 at 6:41 am #

this is pretty cool! i especially like the sleep-tracker stuff. i know i don't sleep straight through the night so that would be really interesting to see.

  37. A Toronto girl out West May 30, 2010 at 8:09 pm #

At one point I thought of getting a Body Bugg or a similar type thing but decided against it based on costs. I don't know about this one but with Body Bugg you essentially need to subscribe to a service so it ends up being mega $$$$ in the end!!!!

I'd totally be interested in hearing your feedback after you've used it for a while – do you find it's accurate?

  38. Jeri June 1, 2010 at 9:08 am #

whooooooooooooa I've never heard of that thing! looks way cool. I'd be super interested in the sleep part of it. sleep cycles and things like that fascinate me.

Glad to hear your review of Fit Bit. I have heard of this new little gadget, but don't know anyone who has used it. I may have to splurge and get one for myself.
