friday favorites: power playlist

i have been in love with my playlist lately.  it was perfect during my race last weekend and has helped power me through some tempo runs lately too.  the thing about my “power playlist” is i won’t listen to it on a normal run for fear of getting burned out on it.  it always happens eventually, but i hate when it does!  so this playlist is reserved only for races and for tempo runs… after that it’s switched over to something else.

i pretty much like most types of music and my long run playlists are sooo random, but for my faster runs i like something with a fast beat, obviously.

so what is on this power playlist of mine?  here are some of my favorites:

david guetta

  • getting over
  • memories
  • missing you
  • choose
  • on the dancefloor
  • sound of letting go
  • i wanna go crazy
  • if we ever
  • love is gone

keSha

  • your love is my drug
  • tik tok
  • take it off
  • kiss ‘n’ tell
  • hungover
  • blind
  • dancing with tears in my eyes
  • boots and boys
  • animal

LMFAO

  • yes
  • scream my name
  • i am not a *****

adam lambert: for your entertainment
guru josh project: infinity
lady gaga: bad romance

yes LOTS of the same people, but it works, what can i say?  there are some more random songs i have just discovered through the genius feature on itunes that i love.  i have had a number of these songs on my list since CIM and they are still going strong – i think that’s a new record for me.

what are some of your favorite running songs right now?

***********************************

running!

wednesday morning i got my bag packed and was all excited to hit the track that night, especially since i missed it the week before.  as the day went on i started looking at my training schedule that hangs on the wall right next to my desk.  usually mondays are a rest day for me, but i did a recovery run that day with kerry since i was off.  i also ran tuesday.  i also ran every day after monday the week before.  the thought had crossed my mind already that maybe track after my race saturday wasn’t the BEST idea i have ever had, then when i realized it would also be my 9th day of running in a row i decided it was best not to go.  i went over it with my friend who i ask all my questions to and made sure i was being smart and not a wimp.  sometimes you are feeling good and are “in it” and don’t really take a step back to see the bigger picture, and that’s where injuries happen.  so i took the rest day and didn’t look back.

thursday i had my medium long run scheduled and my legs felt so much better after a day of rest.  they were never sore at all, but just heavy and i could tell the rest day is just what they needed.  marci was in town from canada, so we had plans to meet up with her at 7 for a 6 mile run, so i decided to do the rest of my run when i got off after work.  this week has been all about shifting, so i decided to shift my tempo miles from friday (since i didn’t do track and didn’t need the day in between and since it had been 4+ days post race, and then i could do my long run saturday if i wanted… so many things to think about!) to the beginning portion of my run.  1 mile warm up, 5 miles @ tempo pace, 1 mile cool down.

it was at least 75 degrees out when i started and i knew this might be a tough one, but i got going anyway and actually didn’t feel that hot to start with.  the last couple miles were a little harder and i was really warm, but i knew i was close so i just pushed through and got them done.

tempo miles:
1 – 7:52
2 – 7:47
3 – 7:41
4 – 7:39
5 – 7:37
avg pace: 7:43

i always play this game with my tempos and try to make the next one faster than the last.  sometimes it takes more effort than others but i nailed it yesterday!  i went back to my car, got a back of luna moons and a water and ran over to our meeting spot.  i was early so i stretched and took in some fuel and waited for the girls.

part 1: 7.2 miles/58:05/8:04 avg pace

marci arrived and we got going but i knew that break had totally killed me.  my legs were TIRED and i was still pretty warm, but it was sooo fun chatting as usual.  i feel like it’s just catching up with an old friend.  we talked about upcoming races and training and all kinds of things.  i love it when bloggers come to town!

part 2: 6.0 miles/58:44/9:48 avg pace

total for the night: 13.2 miles/1:56:49/8:49 avg pace

me, marci, maritza, and kerry

Picture1 215

2 more short runs and a 20 miler to get through in the next 3 days!

have a great weekend and good luck to all those racers!

Thanks for some music ideas! I love the idea of saving the power playlist for hard runs and races… unfortunately I am just using a shuffle right now (love that it's so light and can clip on my shirt) so that wouldn't really work.

Great tempo run, and awesome that you got to meet up with Marci again! (did you ask her why she hasn't been blogging? :p)

i don't listen to music while running but when i did it really depended on my mood. sometimes country hit the spot, sometimes rock. i suppose it came down to what type of workout i was doing too.

and stellar tempo in that weather! it would be great even if it wasn't it heat. youre a beast :)

I love the whole Ke$ha album for running!

Even though he's a poopy-head, I do love me some Kanye to run to. And Justin Bieeeeeeeeeeeeber!

Great job so far this week…kick that 20 miler in the balls!

  12. Alisa March 19, 2010 at 8:57 am #

I found Ke$ha really annoying when I heard her in the car but now I'm obsessed with the Blah Blah Blah song.

I'm with Maritza I do heart my Kanye's workout plan song =). Lady Gaga needs some new music but I'm still rockin' all her old stuff too.

Have you tried Timbaland's new albumn? I really like I bunch of songs on it.

WOW I'm tired just reading about that one day of running! LOL Nice work BTW!

Thanks for the music ideas. I always like to add new stuff to the mix. One of my current favs is MGMT, I have several of their songs on my iPod. :)

The only song I recognized on your play list was Lady Gaga. Ha! I am so outta the loop for what is cool in music. I need to check those out.

Good luck on the 20 miler this weekend.

Gonna have to check out some of those running songs!!! Fun that you got to see Marci again! I just finally met her last weekend, isn't that crazy! We only live about 30 minutes away from each other! :)

I listen to DJ podcasts – so its a faster paced music that doesnt stop. I had a problem making my own play lists due to the change in tempo from one song to another. Now I run to club music and people talking about shots, tequila, and lots of dirty stuff I cant mention here. Lyrics not so appropriate for running, but I zone out the words and just use the tempo ;)

  19. RunningLaur March 19, 2010 at 2:04 pm #

    David Guetta – yesssss.
I may have to go look for some new podcasts now. :)

  20. Sarah March 19, 2010 at 4:10 pm #

I second the Timbaland recommendation! I also love old 80s songs, like Sunglasses at Night, and 90s club stuff. And of course, lady gaga!

  21. The Jesse March 19, 2010 at 4:28 pm #

im not very picky about the music i listen to when i run, like i dont pay attention to the tempo or beat of the music cause i just kinda zone out most of the time. BUT i'm really digging lady gaga lately. i just found out who kesha was this week on idol. i'm not a fan of adam lambert, but i think i might have to check out the rest of your recommendations!

sending you happy running vibes for your 20 miler this weekend :)

  22. Run Jess Run March 19, 2010 at 5:02 pm #

I love the Black Eyed Peas and any old rock/'80's hair songs (like Def Leppard).

  23. Lisa March 20, 2010 at 2:08 pm #

Matisyahu – smash lies is my kick-it-up-a-notch running song right now

  24. runnernic.com March 20, 2010 at 6:01 pm #

  25. Jo Lynn March 20, 2010 at 8:32 pm #

  26. Adam March 22, 2010 at 8:30 pm #

  27. Tara March 23, 2010 at 7:42 am #

There are a bunch of lil jon ones out right now that are really good for tempo work. "outta your mind" is a good one and then I really like "omg" by usher…I will make you a cd :)
