the right wright sock

(i am very late with this post… sorry!! better late than never right?!)

i have expressed my love for wright socks many times on this blog, so when i was contacted to be a part of the runner’s lounge wright sock challenge i was very excited… more socks!

i used to get blisters in the arches of my feet pretty badly, but ever since i started wearing wright socks they have gone away. i get the occasional blisters on my feet, but nothing like i used to and nothing that really bothers me.

i started off in the cool mesh socks, and they worked, but i like a thicker sock, so once i found the running II socks i have been in love. they were the only socks i had run in since the day i put them on, until the wright socks challenge when i was given 6 different pairs to try! i was a very excited runner :)

two were the above socks and one was a very thin pair which i avoid. i like my socks cushiony!

SLX
very comfy, very cushiony, i like them!

DLX
my new favorites! VERY cushiony, no seams, and a lot like the running II socks. i think these are going to be my race day socks :)

another pair i like! comfy and cushiony and definitely in my running sock rotation now.

so what is the right wright sock for you? i am definitely a running II or DLX girl, but really could wear any of them :)
*************************
tonight 8 miles with 3×1 mile intervals was on schedule. i am following the pfitz taper pretty close right now, and the last 2 times i have done it, i skipped this workout. tonight was finally the night to give the mile repeats a try!
i had to go to the dentist this morning, so i didn’t have time to run this morning, so after work it was. it’s still hot here. like 100 degrees hot. my car said 99-101 on the way home from work. i waited until just after 6pm, then i headed out.
i was sweating instantly, my stomach was pissed, my legs were heavy, not the way i like to start a run. i knew i wasn’t going to last long outside, so i just figured i would do my warm up and go home and hit the treadmill.
i got home and felt awful, but i got on the mill and started jogging. i still don’t really trust my times exactly from the treadmill, but i used a stopwatch again to compare my times for each repeat. my goal from the mcmillan calculator based on a 3:40 marathon was 7:15 – 7:32 per mile.
1: 7:29
2: 7:27
3: 7:26
not too bad.. i usually try to be at the lower end of the pace spectrum, and pfitz actually calls for these at 5k pace (which is the low end), BUT i am happy with this workout. i am in taper, i don’t want to push *too* hard that i am sore or that it takes too much out of me. i think i hit it just right :) i woke up my muscles, gave them a workout, but didn’t do too much. plus based on how crappy i was feeling at the beginning of this run, i am just glad i finished it! i really had thought about calling it quits in the middle. AND i finally broke my fear of the mile repeat! don’t get me wrong, they are not easy, but i won’t be so intimidated by them next time around.
total run: 8.0 miles/1:07:37/8:27 avg pace
tomorrow is the last sunset run!! any bay area peeps going to be there?

Nice workout; sounds like you really did hit it right on.

I like sock with cushion too. Thanks for the review.

Nice job on the runs. Hope the weather cools a bit for you!

I have two pairs of Wright socks, and I'm a big fan!

Good job coming back and getting straight on the treadmill. You pumped out some awesome times!

Oh my gosh, I just realized I still have to post my wright socks review too! Add one more item to the to-do list!

Great job on those mile repeats! I have a feeling that if I tried that strategy, the repeats SO would not happen . . . I'd be too tempted by the couch :)

  5. marathonmaiden September 24, 2009 at 4:39 am #

awesome repeats. i try to be on the lower side of 'em too.

and i'm impressed that you even tried to run outside in weather like that! enjoy the last sunset run :)

Great job on the run girl! You nailed it. I've only tried one pair of wright socks. They are SUPER thick and i dont like them very much. I think they are the DLX sock. I'm more of a thin sock girl- the DLX socks seemed to give me blisters. I wouldnt mind trying the thinner ones!

  7. Lisa Slow-n-Steady September 24, 2009 at 4:53 am #

    great job on the run!

Mile repeats have always been my stable for speedwork so I'm especially biased towards them. The key I think to running them well is to pace well and run them comfortably hard and not to burn out in the first quarter. I don't know why but I prefer them over 800s honestly.

Hoping the weather cools down for you!

  9. Marlene September 24, 2009 at 5:12 am #

Ohhh how I love wright socks. I might be wearing the DLX for my race too… still deciding between a couple faves. :)

Nice job on your mile repeats! Awesome work, especially with how crummy you felt to start.

    Wishing fall weather for you!

Sock-wise…I don't really have a preference. Whatever doesn't make me itch or slip too low. Right now I've got nike, under armor, wright socks.

Mile repeats still scare me. I think I'm trying to be too ambitious with them, because when I did them three weeks ago, I could only get through 5, and I was hurtin' by the end! Good work with yours…sounds like you challenged yourself and were smart about it too.

I always wore Balga socks. That's what they had at my running store when I first started running and it's what I've stuck with!

Nice job on getting your run in even though you weren't feeling the best!

  12. Carolina John September 24, 2009 at 6:52 am #

yeay! i have been fighting some blisters recently too. I think some new running shoes are in order, but i'll have to try some of those sox too. sounds great, thanks!

  13. Laura September 24, 2009 at 7:05 am #

I like Wright socks. I hadn't checked up on your blog for awhile…Good luck on your BQ goal. You've really trained well! I hope you do great!

  14. Lacey Nicole September 24, 2009 at 7:06 am #

ugh that is so hot!!! hard to do speed work ont he treadmill when you want a specific start/stop time. you did great! i like you approach based on marathon pace. definitely a terrific taper speed work!!!

what socks will you run the marathon in?

  15. Susan September 24, 2009 at 7:14 am #

I can't believe it's still 100 there! That's crazy…way to get your run in anyway…cool fall will be here soon, supposedly!

I haven't done mile repeats since high school (!!) and I agree that they can be a bit intimidating…however, there's something about THE MILE that is so magical. :)

    Okay, that was cheesy.

  16. B.o.B. September 24, 2009 at 7:28 am #

Thanks for the review. I will have to try them when I am back on the road.

I appreciate your comment on my blog. It was a tough decision but Chicago will be a blast.

I hope you have a great race! I can't wait for the report.

  17. Jamie September 24, 2009 at 7:32 am #

I hope you get a serious break in the weather soon! I hear you on those mile repeats. I see them staring me down on the schedule and I'm a bit nervous :) Awesome job on your!

  18. X-Country2 September 24, 2009 at 7:57 am #

I'll have to check out these socks. Everyone seems to love them.

  19. Katie A. September 24, 2009 at 8:22 am #

I keep hearing about how awesome these socks are…but my local running store buddies say, even though they sell them, that I don't need to waste my $$ on them. I wear asics running socks, that designate between L and R foot and I love them. They rock! But I do like cushion-y socks…hmmm.
See you tonight! I did 7 miles outside yesterday and can't wait for the cool SF weather tonight! :)

  20. Lisa September 24, 2009 at 8:28 am #

Ha ha, I guess I don't run far enough to get blisters. I do like the socks with the built in arch support though. I have some Addidas socks that I really like right now however as my runs get long in duration I suppose I will probably need a more technical sock.

  21. runningcommentaries September 24, 2009 at 9:18 am #

Yeah, do 7 of them… it's REAL fun. haha. Good job– now if only this stupid heat will GO AWAY. Seriously NOW.

  22. Chic Runner September 24, 2009 at 9:47 am #

I do like the socks for that reason too :) they are cushiony! :) Yay for you feeling great! I'm so excited for your next marathon and i won't even be there or running it. ha ha

  23. lifestudent September 24, 2009 at 10:05 am #

When I first started running a friend said to me, I have two words for you "Wright Socks" :) I got them and never looked back. I have the DLX and love em ;)

  24. Jeri September 24, 2009 at 11:40 am #

ooooh great job on the 1600 m repeats. those = hell for me. :) Those are pretty darn close to the splits I'm looking to run in my next 5k, so I'll channel my inner Aron to see if that helps. :D

  25. Alisa September 24, 2009 at 12:05 pm #

I'm a thin sock kind of girl and I also HATE sock tan lines so I think we may be sock opposites =).

I used to get blisters a lot when I wore thick socks, now that I wear the thin kind blisters are much less prevalent.

Way to go on the mile repeats. They still intimidate me!

  26. Meg Runs September 24, 2009 at 3:00 pm #

These are awesome socks. Super job on the repeats.

  27. KK @ Running Through Life September 24, 2009 at 3:27 pm #

Ah yes, heat and running do not make a good combination! Good for you for making in through your warm up and then having a great run on the treadmill.
I am actually going to try out some new wright socks on tonight's run. We will see how they feel!

  28. merrymishaps September 24, 2009 at 8:08 pm #

When I was doing the Wrightsock challenge in August, I LOVED the CoolMesh and couldn't stand the DLX. Also really like SLX and Running II. Now that it's just a bit cooler, though, the DLX pair is getting some love too.

I think I would have called it quits if I felt that bad on a run. Great job!

  29. Rio Runs September 24, 2009 at 8:36 pm #

After hearing such great things about Wrightsocks, I think I'll have to give them a try. Just like finding a good mascara, I'm always looking for a good sock! Your splits are fast…great job!

  30. Amanda September 25, 2009 at 5:03 am #

I definitely feel like I'm missing out by not having fancy running socks. Those all sound really nice, I think they're going on my Christmas list.

  31. Ashley September 25, 2009 at 9:37 am #

Hey girl – I just tagged you in my bloggie blog! :)

  32. lindsay September 27, 2009 at 5:42 am #

thin socks and i don't get along too well either. hooray for more (free!) socks! :)

nice job on the mile repeats. i think they are harder to do on the treadmill personally – i guess i need the ability to glance down and 'check myself' and adjust as necessary. but, 100* would have sucked, so i don't blame you for hitting the beloved 'mill.

hope you had fun at the sunset run!

  33. ShirleyPerly September 29, 2009 at 7:43 am #

I too am a Wright Socks fan. Not sure what type I have as mine don't look like those you posted but I love them :-)

Way to work in your 8-miler!

I love my Wright socks but have never tried the DLX socks. Maybe at the next expo I'll have to buy some.
