socks!

i think i have professed my love of wright socks on this blog before, but i am definitely going to do it again. when i first started running i was always getting blisters on my feet, mostly on my arches. it was annoying and painful. finally i found these amazing socks and hardly ever get blisters anymore, i looove them. to make me love them even more, a few weeks ago i won 2 pairs of wright socks through runner’s lounge. when i was contacted by them to see which ones i wanted, i asked if i could get one pair for chris and one pair for myself since we were both big fans and in need of some new socks. she did even better and sent us each 2 pairs! we just got them in the mail last week and are definitely happy campers. thank you wright socks!

i mentioned in my last post that after my 21 miler i gave compression socks a try. i ordered these ones that marcy recommended and they were in my mailbox in a couple of days. after my normal post long run routine of stretching, taking an ice bath, showering, etc i put them on for the day. usually after long runs i get pretty tight calves and my shins are always a little sore. i could definitely tell i had run 21 awesome miles that day but kept the socks on until it was close to bed time. my legs were feeling tired but ok.

i woke up sunday morning and the bottom half of my legs felt awesome. i was a little nervous the day before since i had run hard and far and could just tell my legs were fatigued, but when i got out of bed sunday morning they felt almost perfect! i was verrrry happy. my quads weren’t very sore either but that didn’t have anything to do with the socks i’m pretty sure (it does make me feel good for my effort and for race day though!). i put them on for another hour or 2 sunday night.

monday morning came, and i had to go to work and wear heels. usually at work my calves feel huge and tight. i didn’t really have that feeling at all today, so again i was happy! i definitely would recommend them and really think they work! i want to wear them everyday :)

*************************************************************
i started “taper” off with a bang today… 8 miles w/5x600m intervals. i wasn’t really feeling up for intervals today but i headed over to the track with chris anyway. we did 3 miles warm up and my legs were feeling slow, but i just decided to see how the first couple went, no pressure, since it is taper time after all.

the first one i started with chris, and then tried to keep up (ha) and went too fast which i knew, i also knew i would pay for it in the next few since i went too fast… but my legs felt really good! the next few came in slower and i was getting a little tired, but i was able to get another fast one in at the end. not extremely consistent but i’ll take it, all were in goal range and a couple a little faster. the last time i did these the total was 12:55, so i was just a second slower overall.

goal: 2:35-2:42 (6:56-7:16)

1: 2:32 (6:52 avg)
2: 2:36 (7:02 avg)
3: 2:39 (7:09 avg)
4: 2:37 (7:04 avg)
5: 2:33 (6:54 avg)

total intervals: 1.85 miles/12:57/7:00 avg
total run: 8.0 miles/1:09:52/8:44 avg pace

the rest of the week shouldn’t be too bad. i have a couple of easy runs, and then pfitz calls for a 8-10k race before a 16 miler on saturday. in the past i just replaced the race with a 10 mile marathon goal pace run, which i think i am going to do again. i found one 10k but its a good hour+ away and i just don’t really feel like it. it’s on sunday and i want to sleep in! i think i am going to cut back on the goal pace miles though, just because… it’s taper time and i can :) we will see how the week goes!

Ok, i’m going to email you about the compression socks and the pfitz training. I read it today while sitting in the doctors office and i have tons of questions. I figured you would be the most help so i’ll shoot you an email tomorrow sometime!

Sounds like a great workout and a great week ahead! :)

I swear by Wright Socks too!! I just wish they had more color choices in my size (prefer the grey ones I first got but now usually get black as white never stays white!).

And awesome job on your 21-miler. I think you’ve convinced me I need to try some compression socks soon!

  8. Missy April 14, 2009 at 3:08 am #

Compression sox, rock out! After ice bath, lay on your back for about 5 minutes, legs up before you put them on, this will help get any blood that is ‘sitting/pooling’ in your calves up towards your heart, then put the socks on. They’ve totally helped me with shin splints too. I run with them in the winter.

  9. D10 April 14, 2009 at 3:13 am #

I need to test out the compression socks. I am so glad they worked for you. Isn’t it odd how running socks or compression socks can be such a huge thing and something to get excited over.

  10. Jocelyn April 14, 2009 at 3:21 am #

  11. Abby April 14, 2009 at 3:22 am #

  12. Running and living April 14, 2009 at 3:38 am #

I love compression socks, too! I just got my pair. They go over my knees, which is great bc my knees are always sore after speed and tempo runs. I think I am going to invest in the compression tights at some point.
Congrats on the intervals. Enjoy the taper and don’t let it get to you (like I did:) Ana-Maria

  13. Mark April 14, 2009 at 3:48 am #

Aron, I am going to get some of those socks! Sounds great. I think I have actually seen folks racing with them on?!
Great intervals, have a great taper time!

  14. Denise April 14, 2009 at 3:51 am #

I just commented on Xcountry…my legs are sore from my run last night. I need to get a pair of these socks!

  15. joyRuN April 14, 2009 at 3:55 am #

That’s awesome you hit your intervals even though you didn’t feel like it. Very satisfying!

  16. Mica April 14, 2009 at 4:03 am #

I love Wright socks. I have the double-layer ones to prevent blistering. They rock!

    Great track workout, speedy!

  17. Marcy April 14, 2009 at 4:06 am #

I *heart* my OxySox! In fact I’m wearing them right now :P Seriously at the end of the day I pop them on kick up my feet and it’s soooo cozy!

  18. Marlene April 14, 2009 at 4:16 am #

    Happy Taper!

mmm compression socks. nice job on the intervals and glad the legs are recovering from your awesome 21 miler. enjoy the start of your taper but don’t get too relaxed now.

I’ve been hearing such great things about the recovery socks, maybe I’ll have to try them out myself!

  23. RunToFinish April 14, 2009 at 5:27 am #

i loved the compression pants, so I may need to checkout the recovery socks, they seem like a great deal.

good call on just doing the run that feels right…i’m not a big fan on traveling all the time for races

  24. Shannon April 14, 2009 at 5:36 am #

    I must get these socks!

  25. Lacey Nicole April 14, 2009 at 5:40 am #

  26. RunnerDude April 14, 2009 at 5:52 am #

I’m right with you on the Wright Socks. I’ve been wearing them since my first marathon in 1997. I’ve tried a few other brands and some have worked well, but the ones I keep coming back to that I know are dependable and won’t give me those dreaded blisters are Wright Socks. I just received a pair of CEP Socks to review on my blog. They sound a lot like the socks you tried. Now I’m eager to use them after my next long run. Happy running on your taper.

  27. Irish Cream April 14, 2009 at 6:17 am #

I LOVE my compression socks! They are seriously just the best thing ever! Enjoy the taper!! :)

  29. Scheri April 14, 2009 at 6:44 am #

Thanks for the review on the compression socks!

Enjoy your taper! You have done amazing with all your training and will have a wonderful marathon too!!!

  30. Alisa April 14, 2009 at 6:46 am #

Taper time already…wow! Pfitz is a meany…intervals after a 21 miler in taper time =).

I tried Wright socks and actually didn’t like them. I found Nike Dri-Fit socks and met my sole-mate (hahaha!).

Sarah uses compression socks, I’d like to pick up a pair and see how I like them.

  31. tfh April 14, 2009 at 7:16 am #

Still hitting those interval times! Wow, I can’t believe you’re tapering already…

Confession: I’m wearing full-length compression stockings under my pants today. They’ve really helped me with quad soreness! But I feel like a granny. ;)

  32. Runner Leana April 14, 2009 at 7:20 am #

I bought compression socks and I keep forgetting to put them on post long run… Oops!

Yay for Wright Socks sending you two pairs for both yourself and Chris!!

  33. the gazelle April 14, 2009 at 7:22 am #

I love that we all have favorite socks & opinions about socks! :)

I have 1 pair of socks I REALLY love, but am always on the lookout for more!

  34. Jamie April 14, 2009 at 7:52 am #

I luv my compression socks! Glad to hear they worked for you too.

    Great job on the intervals!

  35. Janice {Run Far} April 14, 2009 at 8:18 am #

I have been running in Wright Socks for years and I swear by them. I love them so much.

  36. BeachRunner April 14, 2009 at 9:10 am #

    Good luck, Aron. :)

  37. runningcommentaries April 14, 2009 at 9:16 am #

I’ve been considering the compression socks but haven’t made the leap yet. I just may have to. I also have to wear heels at work and sometimes, particularly after long runs, it just hurts!

  38. Nitmos April 14, 2009 at 9:40 am #

I’m a Wright Sock devotee also. Happy tapering!

  39. J April 14, 2009 at 9:54 am #

So do the socks work better than an ice bath?? That would be interesting! Great job on the interval run!

  40. Heather April 14, 2009 at 10:02 am #

I really want to get some compression socks.

Way to go on the intervals!

  41. Vava April 14, 2009 at 11:12 am #

I also wear wright socks and have never had blister issues of any sort. The compression socks sound good, and it’s suprising that it’s taken this long for them to get marketed to runners rather than just people with lower body circulation issues. I’ve used a pair after long runs off and on, but will likely use them religiously as I train for my first marathon.

  42. Susan April 14, 2009 at 11:19 am #

Looks like a good start to the taper, although intervals after 21 miles doesn’t sound like fun! My legs would be tired too, but it sounds like you rocked them anyway!

I’m going to have to try these compression socks…We learned about them in nursing school (post-surgical patients always wear them, as well as many nurses to prevent varicose veins!), and I should put them into action!

  43. Amy April 14, 2009 at 11:37 am #

Wow you went FAST! Good work. Yay for tapers :)

  44. seejessrun April 14, 2009 at 1:11 pm #

Hmmm…I think I’m going to order some compression socks.

  45. Kelli April 14, 2009 at 1:58 pm #

Can you run in them too or are they just for recovery? I have the Zensah ones (they are pink) but they are footless. But I’m at work wearing them right now because my legs cramp at my desk after morning runs.

  46. Ms. V. April 14, 2009 at 2:59 pm #

    Good luck on the taper!

  47. N.D. April 14, 2009 at 3:23 pm #

sweet-thanks for the reviews!!!! :) sounds like everything is going great!

  48. d.a.r. April 14, 2009 at 3:43 pm #

I think you might have just saved my (running) life. I have been battling GIANT blisters on the arch of my right foot for about a month now. It’s to the point that its a blood blister now and really raw. I just ordered two pairs of Wright socks…seriously thank you!

I also got new shoes…had to reward myself for doing the 1/2 marathon :) Hopefully the combo of the two helps!!

  49. Jo Lynn April 14, 2009 at 4:19 pm #

That’s great about the socks! I will let the rep know how happy you are with them when he stops by my store. ;)

  50. Marathon Maritza April 14, 2009 at 7:02 pm #

    I’m sold. I need some.

Yay! Glad you are feeling so strong after the 21 miles…happy taper time! :)

  51. Chad in the AZ Desert April 14, 2009 at 7:39 pm #

Very cool about the socks. I just might have to try a pair.

  52. kilax April 15, 2009 at 3:54 am #

I’ve heard some good things about the compression socks! I think I need to give them a try. I also think I need to rethink my recovery procedure after long runs (and by “rethink,” I actually mean “develop”!).

  53. The Happy Runner April 15, 2009 at 5:03 am #

Sleeping in will do you good!!

  54. Kristin April 15, 2009 at 5:31 am #

Hola! Thanks for visiting my blog! Also, thanks for posting about these compression socks. I also get the huge tight calf feeling limping around in heels on Monday morning, so I would be interested to see how these would work!

I look forward to reading more!

  55. I Run for Fun April 15, 2009 at 8:02 am #

Looks like your taper’s going great. Congrats on winning the socks!

I have to try compresison socks…I’m hearing so much about them.

  56. Amanda April 15, 2009 at 8:55 am #

I haven’t tried Wright Socks but I got a pair of Recovery Socks and LOVE them. I’m going to do a review of them soon. I think I may order some wright socks too. Compression socks are so comfy!

  57. Roisin April 15, 2009 at 12:17 pm #

These socks are getting quite a buzz…looks like I’m going to have to get my hands on a pair!

I’m still amazed at your miles! 16 miles is tapering. Damn!

  58. RoadBunner April 15, 2009 at 1:13 pm #

Thanks for the review. I definitely want to try them out. Maybe someone will be selling them at the expo.

“just because…it’s taper time and I can” Haha! I feel that way, too. Especially since I haven’t had a formal plan this whole training season!

You’ve worked really hard and totally deserve your taper!

  59. Fair Weather Runner April 15, 2009 at 1:17 pm #

I think you totally convinced me to get these. I’m on it, maybe it will help keep my calf issue at bay next training go around! Nice work on the runs, impressive as always :)

  60. Adam April 15, 2009 at 1:38 pm #

Hmmm. I am hearing more and more about these compression socks. Still, I’m a tightwad and I think that $40 will be a pretty tough sell.

What does it do for my tan? If they could get some sort of other benefit like self tanner, then I might be sold!
